Starting out as a vocal group called the Versatiles the 5th Dimension included, Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue, Billy Davis Jr., Lamont McLemore and Ron Townson. The band they formed was a soul-infulenced harmony group. Based in Los Angeles the group toped the US charts for the first time in the 1960's.
After a couple of albums they turned to the song writing of Laura Nyro, whose beautiful soul sounding songs continued their success and introduced the group to the R&B charts. In 1971 they hit number two on the US charts with 'One Less Bell to Answer'. McCoo and Davis left the band and sang as a duet. They had a number 1 hit in 1976 with 'You Don't Have to Be a Star'.
