When Football pioneer Walter Camp first proposed alternating possessions in 1880, it was left to each side to give up the ball if progress wasn’t made. In 1912 it was modified to three downs to make ten yards. The football field stretches 100 yards with an end zone an additional 10 yards deep at each end. They say football is a descendant of soccer and rugby. The loyalty of football fans is some of the greatest in any sport. The NFL tops the list of Americas favorite sport. There are more then one million ticket buying people who attend NFL games each weekend and another one hundred million-plus that watch from home. It has also expanded to the International Globe with the American Bowl a series of preseason games that has been played since 1986. Football is a complex game but the basics are easy to understand. Here is football 101 for the most part. The goal is to score more points then the opposition most like other sports as well. Points are accumulated by scoring a touchdown (6 points), kicking a field goal (3 points) and rare occasions a safety ( points). After scoring a touchdown teams have the option of attempting a kick (1 point) or running and passing from scrimmage for two points. |
